Paw-tastic Promotion

Mrs. Dickey was kind enough to let us see what she thinks about her new position. Here's the interview:

1. How do you feel about being named the new superintendent?

EXCITED!  It is an honor to be trusted with this responsibility!  I love this school SO much and am happy to serve!

2. How will this change affect your connection with the students?

This is such a good question!  I have worried I won't be able to build the relationships I have, but I've learned we make time for our priorities.  I hate the phrase "busy"...Busy is a myth.  I love and value my relationships with students and will continue to prioritize those.  

3. What made you take this position?

I care about this school immensely.  I bleed Kelly Green and take the success of our school personally.  The position was open, and I have gained a strong understanding of the workings of our district and felt led to pursue the superintendency.  I was thrilled to have it offered to me and I know it will be challenging...but it will be so fulfilling.

4. Are there any other changes involving you that you'd like to share with the students?

Not really...we'd like to buy a house in the district...that has proven challenging.

5. What kind of education do you have that will help you in this position?

I have an bachelor of science in elementary education and a middle school math certificate.  I have a masters in Educational Administration from Missouri State University and am close to having my Specialists degree from PSU.  I'm waiting to hear if I've been accepted into the doctoral program at the University of Arkansas.  It is so important to continue your education and be a lifelong learner.  Whether you continue learning in the classroom or on the job, never stop pursuing new knowledge!

6. What inspired you to take this path in your career?

My ag teacher in High School was a phenomenal teacher!  He motivated me to want to make a difference in the lives of students.  When I began teaching, I had a great principal, Dr. Steve Gilbreth, at Joplin South Middle School.  He cared about all of us in his building and tried hard to make sure we were having fun.  I try to channel my "inner Dr. G" and always "do what's best for kids!"

7. What are some tips you have for the students on how to be successful?

I've only been out of high school for ten years.  I challenge our seniors to reflect on there lives and ask them selves where they want to be in ten years.  I feel I am a good example for students to see that a LOT can happen in a short amount of time.  You have to set goals, and then work hard to attain them.  Get it through your head that "busy is a myth" and just get things done!  I've found great success in taking risks and choosing the hard option when given multiple choices.  My parents raised me to have a strong work ethic and we weren't handed anything.  I paid $1100 cash for my first car, and knew I was 100% responsible for my college education.  I've been blessed to have a great support system cheering me along, and enough stubbornness to ensure I met my goals.  I would LOVE to sit down with students and tell them my story.  It's not been an easy road, and has taken a lot of hard work...but it's worth it!  I'm proud to be a Wildcat and look forward to many years in the district!
